Fashion Week Insider

Stay tuned for more Fashion Week insider news from my trip to NYC!

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week: Designer Recaps-Son Jung Wan

Inspired by the Isle of Capri, Son Jung Wan designed a collection of separates made of sumptuous fabrics and chic silhouettes. Draped jackets and layered dresses resembling Helmut Lang, were all minimalistic and simply designed. The color palette offered shades of taupe, cream, charcoal, and navy. The designer incorporated subtle details like a fringed shoulder and a snakeskin waist. Among the crowd were celebrities Carrie Preston and Kelly Rutherford, whom I was able to speak to after the show and get a photo with.  Kelly said she "loves the simplistic designs and chic fit to all of Son Jung Wan’s pieces.”  After only her second runway collection, Son Jung Wan is quickly becoming one of my favorite designers. Mercedes Benz Fashion Week: Designer Recaps-Monique Lhuillier

Monique Lhuillier’s Spring 2012 collection was all about bold prints and saturated colors with a sporty, athletic edge. She used intricate seams to outline the body and color blocking and accents of leather for an unexpected edge. She showed daytime and evening looks however, her evening looks stayed true to her reputation, by showcasing sexy silhouettes, cut-out and lace insets, tulle ruching, open backs and graphic prints on floor-length gowns. Her color palette consisted of canary yellow, cobalt blue, and lipstick red with pops of black and white. The star-studded front row consisted of Mandy Moore, LeAnn Rimes, and Rose McGowan. Mercedes Benz Fashion Week: Designer Recaps-Derek Lam

Derek Lam’s inspiration for his Spring 2012 collection was California dreamin’ invoking “mid-century louche and luxury.” Basically, Palm Springs and the Rat Pack by the pool.  Lam’s signature clean lines and classic silhouettes were present and we saw 60’s geometric prints and canary yellow and coral colors mixed into fitted knits and flowy jumpsuits.  He also showed beautiful beaded tile evening dresses in loose, flowy silhouettes, perfect for dancing to a Frank Sinatra song. I especially loved the leather trench coat, the coral jumpsuit, and the geometric-printed separates.  Models were styled with slick-back ponytails and bushy brows. See my photos from the second row along with images courtesy of the New York Post.

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week: Designer Recaps-Pamella Roland

For Spring 2012, Pamella Roland drew inspiration from American Abstract Expressionist painters such as Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler. Roland created this collection infused with special fabrics and bold treatments that evoke the iconic paintings of this era.  Her Spring collection embodies femininity, power, and elegance, all elements Pamela is known for.  The color palette was simple with mostly white, lavender, and beige with hints of fuchsia and navy. She used sequins, tulle, brocade, beading, rosettes and ruching details in her designs and attracted the likes of actress Aisha Tyler and musician Hillary Scott (of Lady Antebellum). Hillary was kind of enough to take a picture with me and rave about “how beautiful, feminine, and strong the collection is.”  Photos courtesy of Jan Leach.
